HOLIDAY HOME TOUR 2007
HOMES ON THE TOUR

The “Green” House

Sherburne Road
Newly constructed in 2006, this four-bedroom home utilizes heat and hot water provided by a wood-burning boiler located in the backyard. With both the basement and first floor constructed with cement walls, this home retains heat in the winter and stays cool in the summer.  In keeping with their focus on saving energy, they utilize fluorescent lighting in the home wherever possible. The downstairs has Red Birch floors and a beautiful cherry banister leading to the 2nd story.  The homeowners will showcase their contemporary décor with the holiday addition of lights, a Dickens Village and a beautiful homemade Christmas Tree stand.  In the kitchen don’t miss the butler’s pantry used for dinner prep or the concrete counter top that’s imprinted with the family’s handprints; this detail reveals to visitors that the true warmth of this home is found within the family that built it together.

Castle in the Country
Greenland Road
The hidden “Castle in the Country” is set back off the main road 700 feet and is over 6000 sq. feet with an attached barn and situated on just under four acres surrounded by nature.  The open concept first floor features a hot tub inside their great room which leads to a deck overlooking their swimming pool that was designed to resemble a pond.   Visitors will find this tour surprising as the second floor takes you through the master bedroom, a playroom, home office and then down to the barn.  To make this holiday tour complete, the homeowners share with you their 13-foot Christmas tree in the front living room; you won’t want to miss this Country Estate – it is a unique find in Portsmouth.

A Home with Heart
Jim and Nancy Novelline Clayburgh
405 FW Hartford Drive

The Holiday Home Tour is honored to have the home of one of PEP’s founding members and city councilor, Nancy Clayburgh, on its 2007 Tour.  Visitors touring the downstairs of the Clayburgh’s home should note their redecorated and remodeled kitchen designed by Area Kitchens of Portsmouth.  At the heart of the home is the kitchen which is perfectly designed for comfortable entertaining; the flow and decor is warm and welcoming.  Personal touches abound, with family photos in the front hall and Jim’s stein collection in the dining room. For the holidays, a variety of decorations are on display including a traditional tree, illuminated window candles and a manger scene.  Visitors will feel the warmth and generosity that is Nancy Clayburgh as they tour her family home; we are very lucky to have her as a part of this year’s event!

Star Struck in Tucker’s Cove
Tucker's Cove
One of the first built in Tucker’s Cove in 1999.  Displaying photos of the homeowner with celebrities and politicians alike, by touring this home you will get to share in encounters with people such as James Taylor and Greg Lemond.  In fact, note that all guests that have occupied the guest bedroom have been required to have their photo taken in the room and added to the poignant display.  This bedroom showcases a quilt that was made from many of the road races, bike races and triathlons that the homeowner has participated in over the years; throughout the home decorative bikes are on display that add to this theme. The open concept kitchen/family room boasts an 18-foot ceiling that overlooks the deck and hot tub.  Adding to the layout of this home are the two staircases between the first and second floors providing for a sensible flow for traffic. This home will have a Gingerbread theme and many different trees on display reminding visitors that the holidays are here!

Feng Shui in Tuckers Cove
Tucker's Cove
Located in Tucker’s Cove this is a homeowner designed and built Colonial home that boasts Victorian accents and a Feng Shui design. Wood floors throughout this home are only a portion of its appeal; it’s the take your breath away spiral staircase leading to an inlaid compass rose that will really awe visitors. The kitchen is furnished with floor-to-ceiling cabinets, stainless steel appliances and granite counters to inspire, but it is the coordinating dog feeding station that reminds this is a home that welcomes all. With extra high ceilings and rich, warm color schemes, this home is designed to achieve harmony with the environment. The homeowners welcome you to experience how this Feng Shui home successfully combines intention, ingenuity and interior design.

Santa’s Toy Shoppe
Little Harbour
Built in 1938, this cozy cape with wood floors has recently had a kitchen update into an open concept kitchen/dining office area.  A mahogany wrap around deck was added to the home in recent years; enjoying their hot tub under a large old maple tree that provides an awning-like feel to the side deck.  Visitors on the Home Tour will be welcomed by the homeowner, in Donna Reed inspired apparel, and the warm scent of fresh baked cookies. Most intriguing about this stop on the tour are the themed window “shadow” boxes displaying Santa’s village from the 40’s to the 70’s, teddy bears, gingerbread houses, and many other surprises to catch your eye.  The artistic collection contains everything from glass ornaments honoring Strawberry Banke to old-fashioned toys and ornaments salvaged from the treasures of others donated to Portsmouth’s Goodwill.  Enjoy this inspiring home, “Santa’s Toy Shoppe”, right here in Portsmouth!

Something Old, Something New
Little Harbour
An open concept cape, this home was specially designed to look and feel old.   Visitors will be delighted with the collectibles found throughout the home; note the red and chrome kitchen stools from a diner in northern, NH, the child’s metal truck on the counter holding cooking supplies and the wagon coffee table in the family room.  The creative design of the center staircase leads them toward the kitchen in the back of the house.  Even beyond the antiques, the cozy gas fireplace built into their bedroom wall will impress visitors on this year’s tour.  For the holidays, the family will display their sons’ hand knit stockings (an heirloom from their aunt) and two eclectically decorated trees.  Two angel figurines, a century old and part of her husband’s family, put the final touch on this new “old” home that showcases the best the past has to offer.

Family Charm
Little Harbour
The charm of the 1920’s is captured in this bungalow style home. Visitors on this year’s home tour should appreciate the careful attention paid to the design of their recent addition; keeping to the original style of the home was of utmost importance to the owners.  This home boasts ample storage in the pantry with floor to ceiling cabinets and large storage drawers – no one will ever go hungry here!  The open kitchen area, perfect for holiday gatherings, has a built in banquet in keeping with the traditional Bungalow style and, a large “L” shaped island; note the wet bar, built to look like a piece of furniture, as well as the earthy green paint scheme that compliments the creamy bead board cabinets.  Built-in bookcases located in the living room were then added to the new family room to create a consistent flow between the rooms.  Conclude your tour in the great lower mudroom – where the kids drop and store their gear. For the holidays, the home is filled with an eclectic arrangement of decorations. Visitors will quickly realize that what is really at the heart of this charming bungalow is the assortment of family photos showcased not only for the holidays, but all throughout the year.
